Is health care finally ready for cloud adoption?

Cloud Computing

A recent survey from CDW LLC suggests that today’s businesses are gravitating toward cloud adoption. Surprisingly, the health care industry is not an exception.

Roughly 30% of the 150 health care organizations surveyed indicated that they are “implementing or maintaining cloud computing” services. That’s more than K-12 education and all levels of government. (These findings are consistent with a June 2010 survey from Accenture PLC on cloud adoption.)

CDW found that the benefits of cloud computing services — notably, consolidated IT infrastructure and remote access to documents and information — are increasingly consistent with businesses’ strategic IT goals.

Rather than dive headfirst into the deep end of cloud services, though, businesses are clutching the railing and slowly wading into the shallow end. Nearly 75% of users began cloud adoption with a single application. CDW said these deployments tend to be “commodity applications” such as email, file storage, video conferencing and online learning.

That’s good news for health care providers, since the best way to encourage cloud adoption in health care is by deploying applications that do not disrupt clinical workflows. None of the aforementioned commodity applications would do so — and, in fact, video conferencing and other telemedicine technology would actually enhance the patient experience.

Security, of course, remains the biggest hindrance to cloud adoption in health care. Starting small, as other industries have done when rolling our cloud services, may be the best way to address the issue.
