Don’t text patient orders, Joint Commission says

Text messaging

A short statement from The Joint Commission encourages hospitals to put the kibosh on physicians who send patient orders as text messages.

“This method provides no ability to verify the identity of the person sending the text and there is no way to keep the original message as validation of what is entered into the medical record,” the organization wrote in response to a question on its website about texting patient orders.

In a follow-up, FierceMobileHealthcare noted that the statement isn’t official Joint Commission policy so much as it is, in essence, a public service announcement about protecting personal health information.

Given that text messages don’t fit into HIPAA audit trails, and given the near impossibility of importing text messages into electronic health record (EHR) systems, it’s advice worth heeding.
