CMS released more vendor-specific numbers on meaningful use stage 2 attestation, after reporting last week that eight eligible hospitals and 447 eligible providers have attested to stage 2 as of May 31. The vendor data — specifically, the absence of certain vendors — provides a preliminary look at which vendors could potentially precipitate hardship exceptions, which CMS offered to providers who could not get meaningful use certified software updates in time to apply for EHR incentives. That would put them in danger of losing a year’s worth of payments.

SearchHealthIT.com will be offering several more detailed analyses of the updated data set in the coming weeks. Initial digging by our Hannah Pullen-Blasnik shows some interesting findings.

At first glance, some highlights show cloud vendors have grabbed an early lead:

  • Cloud vendor athenahealth, Inc. accounted for 287 of 518 stage 2 attestation payments.
  • Epic Systems Corp., 97.
  • PracticeFusion, 75.
  • Cerner Corp., 27
  • gMed, Inc., 22.
  • Louisiana, home of current National Coordinator for Health IT Karen DeSalvo, M.D., leads the nation with 97 stage 2 attestations, or nearly 19%.
  • Pennsylvania is second with 48, virtually tied with Ohio at 46 (both about 9%).
  • California follows with 41 (8%).
  • Massachusetts rounds out the top five states with 30 attestations (6%).
  • 11 states have either one or two stage 2 attesters.
  • 15 states have no stage 2 attesters yet.

Stay tuned for more on this.
