The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announced the completion of its Health IT Hazard Manager tool and extensive beta testing, which gives health care providers a method of capturing and managing hazard data in software “before they have the potential to cause harm,” according to the AHRQ Web site.

While the Hazard Manager tool itself has not yet been released, the research reports surrounding its development are available for safety-minded HIT leaders to delve into.

HIT safety and incident reporting has been the focus of several discrete groups, including the PDR Network’s EHRevent system that tracks provider reports and feeds them back to vendors. The ONC and FDA are mulling how to move forward with possible reporting and tracking of HIT safety issues.

The AHRQ tool, funded with a $750,000 grant, doesn’t allow health care providers to share data collected with the tool among themselves, but to see only their own reports. Vendors, however, will receive the safety reports pertinent to their products. According to AHRQ, “health care organizations, vendors, policymakers, and researchers may request access to view aggregated, de-identified reports of hazard attributes.”
