Business intelligence systems can only work if data _____ throughout the enterprise’s systems.
a. jives
b. jibes
c. gibes

Answer: b

Explanation:
To jibe is to be in accordance. An electronic health system can’t be effective unless the health records for individuals have the same data across the system.

Jiving is different. My first association is to the swing dance meaning — I picture the data twirling, being spun out, tossed around. Which seems a little unsafe to me.

The more usual association, these days, is to loose talk or nonsense. And that isn’t the aim for electronic records, either.

The goal is not to make data dance or talk foolishness.

Oh… and gibing is mockery. Which we would leave ourselves open to if we talk about data jiving.

The Random House Word Maven’s Word of the Day explains further.
