The PASS Community Summit 2009 is being held in Seattle this week, and naturally a lot of attention is being given to Microsoft’s upcoming database releases, particularly SQL Server 2008 R2.

IIS gets patched, SQL Server not so much

Microsoft is actively working on patching a critical flaw affecting three versions of Internet Information Services (IIS) that was discovered earlier this week. Another vulnerability affecting SQL Server, however, isn’t getting so much love.

New SQL Server tools drop in July

A couple of new DBA tools were released last week for SQL Server – Idera’s SQL Comparison Toolset and SQL Backup Pro 6 from Red Gate Software. Both products are available for 14-day, fully-functional free trials.

Details emerge about SQL Server 2008 R2

“Kilamanjaro” has now gone the way of the “Katmai”, but the newly dubbed SQL Server 2008 R2 is still creating some chatter among DBAs and other IT pros.

Microsoft announced at TechEd 2009 that a Community Technical Preview (CTP) for the next version of SQL Server will be available later this summer, and with that, details of the new release began to hit the Web.

Windows 7 and R2 make headlines at TechEd 2009

This is the first time in three years that I didn’t attend TechEd (though apparently I’m not alone in that regard). Some of my colleagues, however, are still out in L.A. this week pounding the pavement and covering all of the big announcements.
