Yes Mac fan boys – it is true! There is a new piece of malware lurking in the depths of the inter-webs. It is called Mac Defender and if you are not careful the application and take over your Mac and attempt to extort money from you. Here are some tips for safe computing on your Mac as well as how to remove the infection if you allowed it to install.

Your first indication that your system is on it’s way to being infected is seeing an installer window for MacDefender. It will prompt you to allow it to install and prompt you for your password – DO NOT LET IT INSTALL! If you do not allow it to install it ends there… But if you typed in your password and now see an icon in your upper right hand corner of your Mac follow these steps to get rid of it:

1. End the task by opening Activity Monitor (Applications–> Utilities–> Activity Monitor) and killing the Mac Protector process.
2. Now click the Apple menu and hit System Preferences –> Accounts –> Log-in Options and remove any Mac Protector references.
3. Now go to your Applications folder and drag MacProtector to the trash.

Good Luck Mac Friends!
