Can I upgrade my Power Edge 2950 to quad core Xenon 5400 processors?

I just wanted to save our readers a little bit of grief if they have to deal with the same issue that a friend of mine recently ran into:

My 2950 was working fine with Server 2008 & Hyper-V. Just only had the two dual core CPU’s.

Ordered two Intel Xeon Quad Core 5400 series processors, got some thermal paste and swapped the processors.

Now the Poweredge will not boot, has a ierr 1410 CPU 1 scrolling on the little display.

I can’t find anything that tells me what this code means and what steps to try and fix it.

For now we are going to try putting the dual cores back in and update the bios.

I’m looking to see if anyone has done this successfully and what did you need to do to make it work.

The answer was quite simple -

The only 2950 that will support the 5400 processor is the PowerEdge 2950 III (It needs to say III or III in a circle.) If you have an older version you will HAVE to use the 5300 series of processors. And that’s it. No workarounds no nothing!
