I don't think it's that confusing - seems pretty straightforward to me when looking at this chart:
http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/editions_comparison.html

Sure they've upped the top price point, but they could have chosen to charge extra for FT, Host profiles, etc. and I'm glad they didn't do that. vSphere is better value than VI3, IMHO.

@MJewell: I believe you'll get the vSphere Essentials package

Does anybody have an idea what is happening with recent purchases of the ESXi Management Kit? When you purchase it, it says '1 year software subscription'. Does it entitle you to vSphere of a relevant flavor?

I agree that VMWare has the right to make money, but it's not like they weren't making money before. Even before this price hike, they were arguably the most expensive of the hypervisor vendors out there. Customers who have been paying maintenance for years should be grand-fathered into the new license model (old enterprise = new enterprise +) and maybe maintenance is based on a percentage of the new price instead of the old. That may cut down on the windfall for VMWare, but they'll get their money, and long-time customers won't feel violated.

My first impression was that VMware now requires the same expertise
that is required to properly manage Microsoft licenses. We will soon
see VMware licensing professionals...Given the importance
of Virtualization it might be right to have this situation...

Jack.
