The VirtualBox New VM wizard let's you create a new or select a pre existing .vdi. There is no need to use the disk manager to pre create them. Not sure if you are referring to an older version, but ver 2.1.2 with all the latest features is really worth a test drive! 

I use VirtualBox regularly and find it to be an equal to VMware Workstation when just running random VMs. Workstation wins when you need a full development platform, however.
