Increased productivity is the only way to increase the standard of living. Despite a worldwide recession, there are plenty of IT (and other) jobs going begging.
Freedom is the partner of productivity. The freedom to choose between personal service and impersonal service (or operating systems or databases) is what really drives progress. Progress only stops when government limits what we can choose.

India seems to be a good contrast to this. When I arrived at my hotel the car had to go through an inspection for bombs - 2 people did the inspection, 1 stood by to open the gate (manually) and two others were watching. I get dropped off at the door of the hotel and I go through a security scan similar to the airport - that takes 4 people. Then I get into the hotel and two other people are waiting for me, one has a refreshing beverage and the other takes me to my room. I was expecting a certain consistency with my hotel experience, similar to the experience you describe above, but it turns out I was wrong.
