At one time I was of the opinion that most it workers should be salaried professionals. However, over the last several years I have seen many workers taken advantage of in exactly the manner described. Paid as salary, but their work billed hourly, and thus forced to work many hours without additional pay. Over the last year, I was similarly taken advantage of in this manner, I was on call 24x7, for 9 months, averaged 57 hours/ week, and didn't get so much as a comp day. IT workers are ripe for some sort of organization.
