I have over 30 years in IT. During a 2009 re-org I became unemployed. I can’t find a new job, I think because I am 70 years old. Older men seem to fair better than women. They are distinguished and intellectual. Seems like older women are viewed as Grandma (I even had my direct report call me that). How do you overcome sterotypes. I have another 15 to 20 years left, should I just bake cookies?

Our networking and mentoring is important. Fortunately, my company does better than the 5% figure quoted in the article but I sometimes look around at technical meetings and realize I’m the only woman in there. I do believe women are making progress but shudder at the acceptance of the ‘booth bimbo’ concept.
