Have you had a “taxing” week? Bad puns probably won’t make you feel any better, but checking out our weekly roundup of news bits and analysis just might — it’s totally free. Earth Day is coming up this weekend, so we’ve included a couple of items on eco-friendly(?) technology for your reading pleasure, along with a pair of pause-worthy pieces on privacy.

Kermit was so right: Apple found out this week it’s not easy even to try being green. The company was put on the defensive when Greenpeace activists climbed to the roof of its Cork, Ireland, data center to protest what they say are shoddy claims about the cleanliness of Apple’s energy consumption.

Innovation is blowin’ in the wind in Nebraska, where researchers are using eco-friendly technology to create a zero-energy-consumption traffic light system.

There could be so many good uses for this technology, but for some crazy reason we have our concerns about a chip that lets phones see through walls.

If the previous item doesn’t make your privacy-loving skin crawl, how about text messages that know where you’re going and where you’ve (allegedly) been?

And here we thought the end of the world was supposed to come in December!

Maybe it’s an effect of that “Law and Order” marathon we sat through last weekend, but for some reason we were really drawn to things litigious this week. In this Friday’s roundup of news and opinion bits you may have missed, Yahoo goes after Facebook, a lawyer slowly backs away from her Pinterest boards and someone really sours on Siri.

We’re halfway through March, so the New Year prognostications have really dropped off. But don’t despair, lovers of divination: Here’s a look through the crystal ball at IT in 2020.

Goldman Sachs isn’t the only place you’ll find a burning bridge leading out this week. A former Google exec dishes on why he left the search giant.

Is a new patent lawsuit against Facebook a “pathetic and heartbreaking last stand for Yahoo”?

Apparently it wasn’t “ABC 123.” In a heartening tale for the security-concerned, the FBI is forced to call on Google to crack an Android phone’s pattern-screen lock.

This is the second story we’ve encountered in the last month or so about potential legal problems tied to Pinterest. Both involve lawyers who are now former users. Just saying.

Siri gets sued. Dear Apple, we wouldn’t mind if she gave us bad directions and messed up the weather forecast if she’d finally refuse to help out that annoying kid with the guitar.

There was an interesting side conversation during the Q&A portion of a session on enterprise mobility at last week’s Gartner Catalyst Conference.

Someone asked the panel what they thought about privacy on mobile devices. What if sharing information on mobile apps gets to the point where your insurance provider knows too much about you, for example?

As we reported in a past story on enterprises’ mobile app plans, some health care providers and pharmaceutical companies are considering apps that would tell patients when to take their medication.

One audience member pondered this question: What if a health care provider decides to sell that type of information, and the next thing you know, your insurance provider shuts off your prescription because you aren’t taking the pills as scheduled?

That’s a scary scenario, but given just how much information we are willing to share over mobile devices and on social media networks, it’s not an impossibility.

But as panel moderator and Gartner analyst Paul DeBeasi said, “Only old people care about privacy,” repeating something his teenage son had said to him. His response had been that his son would care when he’s older. (What had bothered DeBeasi more than the generation gap around privacy was the possibility that information is probably being collected about people that they don’t even know about.)

But is it true that older generations are more cautious and younger generations have no privacy boundaries? The panel thought so.

“Let’s face it, younger generations are more than willing to share personal information — they want to share personal information, said panel member Randy Nunez, advanced networks and mobility director at Ford Motor Co. “And until they run into situations of ‘How does my insurance company know what my medical practices are’, until [privacy issues] start impacting them personally, there’s going to be a lot we give up in terms of privacy and security.”

Does that mean that enterprises also will have to give up a lot in terms of privacy and security? Or will the right controls around an enterprise mobility strategy put a stop to “over-sharing?” Then again, how do you balance controls when personal information is mingled with corporate data on a mobile device? And what happens when you ask employees to buy their own devices?
