What’s Your Latest Job Complaint?
Posted by: Suzanne Wheeler
This post in the IT Leadership blog on TechRepublic really made me smile. How many times have we heard someone complain about how thankless and difficult their job is?
I have a phrase I tag on to my at-work commentary when I talk about something negative. “But I’m not complaining” follows every mention of what others use as fuel to a fiery round of whining. I acknowledge the situation may not be perfect, but I’m perfectly accepting of my circumstances. Each one of us has the free choice to walk away from our jobs if we really feel it causes enough misery.
Yes, I have walked away from a job because it made me miserable. The next few months were spent working for temporary agencies and applying for new jobs. Money was tight, and life became difficult but it was the best choice for me. When I hear someone whining about their job I must resist the temptation to ask, “So when are you quitting?” Then I remind myself to be thankful not only for having a job, but being able to appreciate all it affords me in life.
If you have a complaint with your current work life - talk to someone about it. If your spouse is tired of you whining about work and refuses to listen anymore - you may want to examine your job choice. It may be time to change departments, find a new employer, or even switch career paths.
