HP’s 3Com acquisition: Vendor market activity spurred the move

HP has made a somewhat-surprise move and acquired 3Com, a venerable but now fallen giant in the networking field, and the move is very likely an explicit a changing of the guard with respect to enterprise networking.

We’ve noted that the control of network decisions is passing to data center IT personnel, and thus that network sales engagement means having IT products in the portfolio. HP obviously has them and is just as obviously now planning to expand its network portfolio.

But we think Brocade’s purchase of Foundry and Cisco’s decision to enter the server space is the catalyst for the move. 3Com has a new data center switch product that could significantly augment the HP portfolio, and also a relationship with Huawei and a position in Asia.

Tapping the China market is likely an early goal for the deal. The HP move could put pressure on IBM, which has been relying on partnership relationships in networking rather than fielding its own product. It may also put some of the smaller vendors in the LAN space into play, including Extreme, and possibly Brocade or Juniper.

HP nears EDS acquisition deal

HP is nearing an agreement to acquire EDS, which would make it the second-largest integrator in the world after IBM and a truly formidable challenger to IBM for perhaps the first time. The deal comes as the role of IT is shifting in the market in general, due to the emergence of the SOA-driven IT cycle, and also to a shifting relationship between IT and networking. While the deal highlights competition in the IT space, it also has implications for Cisco, whose software/service initiative is the company’s primary growth strategy. EDS has also had relationships with network vendors and a not-too-successful strategy to integrate networks and services it launched with Level 3.

Telecoms focus in on business model transformation

Posted by: Tom Nolle
IT, Network equipment

An IBM study of telecommunications predicts that operators will be less focused on simple revenue growth or cost reduction and more on business model transformation in the coming five years. This harmonizes with our own survey, if one considers that “business model transformation” means redirecting business focus on different activities. One import of the shift that IBM focuses on is that this almost certainly involves more IT focus than pure network equipment focus, which we believe strongly to be true. This is likely another datapoint validating Cisco’s software shift, and it shows other vendors the direction to take. It also raises the question of whether IBM might either acquire or partner more strongly with a network vendor for service provider networking.
