Well, here’s something we didn’t see coming — Cisco has announced an enterprise-targeted tablet called Cius (pronounced “see-us”) based on Google’s Android. By jumping in to compete with the iPad, and by allying with Google, Cisco may be sending market-shaking messages beyond the tablet itself.
We’d noted in prior posts and in Netwatcher that tablets could be considered a valuable thin client for many enterprise applications, providing that issues of security and flexibility of use could be addressed. The gadget is about the weight of an iPad but with a smaller form factor, and it’s designed to be integrated with cloud computing, video, UC/UCC and more.
In all, this is a major step for Cisco and one that could be either offensive (taking aim at rivals like IBM and HP) or defensive (countering the inevitable HP/Palm tablet). In either case, it demonstrates just how far the rivalries of tech are being changed by Apple and consumerism.
