Posted by: Joshua Wood
Quotes

Hi all,

Perhaps you are a network administrator or have been one in the past? At any rate, a couple of these might sound familiar.

1. If you have any trouble sounding condescending, find a Unix user to show you how it’s done. – Scott Adams

2. Why did the system administrator cross the road? To get coffee. Why else would one be outside? – Author Unknown

3. The most likely way for the world to be destroyed, most experts agree, is by accident. That’s where we come in; we’re computer professionals. We cause accidents. – Nathaniel Borenstein

4. There are three kinds of death in this world. There’s heart death, there’s brain death, and there’s being off the network. – Guy Almes

5. As a network administrator, I can take down the network with one keystroke. It’s just like being a doctor but without getting gooky stuff on my paws. – Scott Adams (Dogbert)

Apple and Samsung Dominate Market

Posted by: Joshua Wood
Apple

Hi all, in a very unsurprising turn of events it is revealed that Apple and Samsung control the vast majority of the smartphone market. The majority of their growth comes at the demise of competing hardware vendors such as RIM and Nokia. The dominance of the these two mammoth companies is expected to continue to grow as the retreat by the lesser sold products continues to shrink.

Windows 8 – Higher Demand and v7

Posted by: Joshua Wood
Microsoft, Windows 8

Hi all, Windows 8 is on sale but how is it doing? According to Mr. Ballmer “We’re seeing preliminary demand well above where we were with Windows 7, which is gratifying”. I bet that is gratifying considering the mixed reviews that the new OS is getting. According to some sources there are over 600 million PCs out there that are just waiting to be sold an upgrade to Windows 8. With those kinds of numbers you have to wonder how in the world Windows 8 could fail.

Amazon – Strikes at iPad mini

Posted by: Joshua Wood
Amazon, Apple, ipad

Hi all, if competition for the tablet space wasn’t already heated Amazon started to take swings today at the tablet leader on their homepage. Their homepage sported a matrix comparison of the two products with an excerpt from a review by Gizmodo. The quote from Gizmodo ended with “… cramming a worse screen in there, charging more and accusing others of compromise? Ballsy.”. The link on the matrix takes you to the Amazon fire HD purchase section even if you click on the picture of the iPad mini. Let the games … continue.

Apple Laptop Sales Number Grow Marginally

Posted by: Joshua Wood
Apple

Hi all, this week Windows 8 has launched and a raft of new apple features and products have launched. Despite the products and features and the way that Apple has increased efforts to dominate the market its laptop sales only increased by about 1% in year over year sales.

That is suprising to say the least. Engadet says, “A bit more surprising are the company’s Mac sales numbers which, despite a new slate of MacBooks, saw year-over-year growth of only two percent for sales of an even four million in the quarter — compared to growth of seven percent in Q2.” (source below). That is an interesting number given the effort that Apple is putting behind the laptop/desktop group.

It will be interesting to see the sales from the first quarter of 2013 and see if Apple is able to pick up a greater chunk of the laptop/desktop market share after the holiday season that has had a chance to run its course.

Reasons You Shouldn’t Upgrade to Windows 8

Posted by: Joshua Wood
Microsoft, Windows 8

Hi all, Windows 8 is here and products are about to start shipping with the new OS from Windows in large quantities. But why do you care? In the history of Microsoft their product releases tend to follow the Star Trek formula where every other release is terrible. If we walk this through we have Windows 2000, which was great. Then there was ME, which was terrible. Then there was XP, which was great. Then there was Vista, which was the most horrible OS known to man. Windows 7 followed, which is fantastic. Now we have Windows 8 and Microsoft is due to throw out another bomb.

Personally, I haven’t seen anything in Windows 8 that I need or want. In fact I have seen a lot that I don’t like such as the Metro interface on servers or the removal of the Start button. Microsoft works so hard to get people to use something and their feet are firmly planted on the feature they rip it right out from under them. Ok, that was my rant. These links below don’t disagree with me though.

Apples Tuesday Event

Posted by: Joshua Wood
Apple, Microsoft

Hi all, the Apples announcement has been looming for weeks now. Apple is almost definitely going to be releasing their iPad mini which is going to be a spectacular product for the holidays but will won’t be void of competition like in previous incarnations of the iPad line. Pretty much every major player has seen the light and glory of the money fields that is the tablet market and all of your traditional hardware manufacturers are coming to the table with offerings including Microsoft with their own tablet, hardware included. I bet that isn’t going to make them any friends.

What else is supposed be to announced on Tuesdays worst kept secret event in the history of Apple’s secret events? Well, there is supposed to be a 13 inch version of the MacBook Pro with retina display, a new version of the Mac mini and maybe but not likely, a MacBook Air change.

With all of this happening on Tuesday Microsoft will be following a media blitz as there not so secret event is happening two days later on Thursday. The assumed play here is that Apple is trying to steal Microsoft’s thunder by announcing a smaller and cheaper product before Microsoft has a chance to offer up pricing for theirs. This week should be a media buffet in the tech world.
