Now I am no developer, and when I say NO I mean NO so I am going to need some help making the connection. Seems as if the move for developers from Windows XP to Vista was a big one and may have been mishandled by Microsoft. Are we as an i community doing the same thing? Should we abandon RPG, COBOL, FORTRAN for the likes of JAVA, PHP and C?
Now being someone who likes new and shiny things I would say yes. I think the i attaching itself to PHP and MySQL is a step in the right direction and of course IBM have no idea how to foster that growth, and when I say that I mean no disrespect to IBM but, IBM sucks at build new communities. They don’t make things open source, and they don’t see FREE as a way to help. The recent Lotus movement where after OpenNTF being open for god knows how long now gets some attention from IBM is truly sad.
IBM should of course support the older languages, but should really place more emphasis on the new technology that is going to drive the system into a new era. Are we as i people destined for the same ill reputation as Microsoft and Vista because we are not “done right” and are not “hip” and a bit “free”. It’s time for IBM to really take a long hard look at the POWER platform and the OSes it runs and figure out how to tackle the next 20 years of growth. I can say PHP, C, MySQL, Python, AJAX, JAVA and other fancy words but how to get get them inside the i before it to late?

Here are some highlights:
“Nashville, Tenn., is traditionally known for its country music heritage. But to attendees of the recent Common conference, it will also be known as the place where System i, iSeries and AS/400 hardware were laid to rest and reborn as Power. “
“During the town hall meeting we heard talk of unification, single hardware platform and the i as the center of the OS offering for the new Power equation. IBM decided that Common was the place to let this cat out of the bag, and looking back it was more like a boxcar full of tigers. “
“The biggest question I walked away asking is what do we do to welcome our newfound brothers and sisters in the AIX and Linux on Power communities?”
I dedicated this article to Al Barsa Jr who will be missed in and around the COMMON Community.

I know this is starting to look like the COMMON blog but you don’t have a System i community without COMMON and right now my day to day activities are very COMMON based. I don’t work on my COMMON sessions at work mind you but when I get home and the sun goes down I grab the MacBook Pro and fire up Pages and Keynote and get working on my session material. I have to have it all in this weekend. So the pressure is on to delver one a night this week and be done with it. If you have me on your sessions you should be able to download my material early next week to get a leg up. I will be posting an IMAGE of Ubunut too so you can tinker free of charge.

I am not the only one getting all nuts about the upcoming COMMON in Nashville, TN at the Opyland Hotel. I went there as a kid when I think I was about 11 or 12 and it was fun. I am sure it’s going to be fun this time to, but I don’t think I will get to meet Enis from The Dukes of Hazzard like I did the first time.
Chris Maxcer is talking about what he is looking forward to at COMMON? What are you looking forward to and what do you look forward to the most each year?

COMMON again is fast approaching (March 30 -April 2) and I wanted to take a moment to give you a really quick overview as to what I am presenting at COMMON and why you should think about attending one or all of my sessions.
You can find the COMMON Online Session Guide here, and this is the place where you can schedule your entire week all in one spot. I would highly recommend that you use this to at least plan out your days at COMMON and then place them in your calendar. We have been asking for a way to import them into either Lotus Notes or Outlook but seems like the more we ask the less it gets done. I have heard the system is changing. Keep your fingers crossed. You don’t have to be registered for the conference in order to use it.
Background about me
David Vasta - I am the newest Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the team that presents Linux on System i & the new Open Source Products for System i. My main focus is getting you started with Linux and then exposing you to Linux on System i or as I call it “Linux & i”.

Tip of the Week
It’s not so much a tip as it is a little insight that might over time be a tip.
The System i world is being change and right before your eyes. Without any of you out there knowing it. The System i and the System p are getting closer and closer to each other, the lines are blurring and while you were sleeping IBM let Sun in the door and now is thinking about pushing the Solaris OS out on Intel blades and such, the same blade systems we all want for out Power6 CPUs and our i5/OS. What is a decent System i guy to do?
I think the writing on the wall is very clear and I have been a big subscriber to this practice for a long time, if you have made your life’s work the System i as an Admin then you have done yourself a huge disservice. While I will agree any day that the System i is by far the superior platform for most large workloads, it would behoove you to learn a little UNIX, nay a good bit of UNIX or Linux. It’s one way to survive and not seem like your stuck just running the System i.
Back in 2001,2002, & 2003 I jumped into Linux & UNIX with both feet. I was living in Atlanta and started attending after hours classes at Kennesaw State University to get a UNIX/Linux Administrator Certification from KSU. It was a good bit of hard work but in the end I had a very good understanding of UNIX and was able to administer a UNIX server much like a System i. I know had a firm knowledge of dozens of platforms all using the same central theme, UNIX.
This bit of knowledge has made me a better Admin over the years and propelled my career a bit, well I should say a lot. Companies don’t look at me as a one trick pony like some System i Admins. Not that being a really great System i Admin is a negative, but just think what you can do with a little bit of very detailed Windows knowledge and a firm grasp of UNIX. You can in fact work pretty much anywhere and contribute to most any project in any company.
OJT is also a very important part of the equation. While getting the certificate was one thing, putting it all to good use is a whole new blog post. So find a new direction, and new OS and spend a little time getting to know UNIX or Linux. Solaris is now free for the taking along with FreeBSD, any Linux and many other enterprise classed OSes. Might I recommend a little Ubuntu.
Laern a little UNIX and come to COMMON where I will be preseting Linux on System i tracked classes. I look forward to see you all there and will keep posting more about the System i and Linux over the next few months leading up to COMMON.

With Christmas fast approaching and I am still figuring out what I would like to have under the tree from Santa, I ran across an article that said what Enterprise Classed IT types were wanting for their data centers this year. I know if I had an unlimited budget, and don’t we all, I would want System i Power6 and lots of it, V6R1, Lotus 8, Lotus Symphony to be GA and replace MS Office,Linux on System i to replace those costly Windows File Server and Print Servers, and the fastest robotic tape backup system money could buy, of course LTO4 would be in order. So past the things you might like if you could take the money out of the companies bank account or if money were not object. and read the Article I found and enjoyed reading.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year, I will be moving myself and my family next week, the day after Christmas from Colorado to Charlotte, NC and will be rather busy. I have some posts lined up and will make sure you have something to read and enjoy!
