Sunday – You need to make sure you are in Nashville early on Sunday. All the fun starts Sunday afternoon. If you are going to do a session on Sunday then you need to be there on Saturday, but at the least be at the hotel Sunday @ 12 PM. That way you can walk around and get to know the joint. The Expo floor opens @ 1 PM and you really want to spend as much time in there getting all the free crap they bring, and learning about their products. I will explain the Expo later too.
Make sure you have your week layed out as to what you want to do and what you want to attend and kind of make mental notes as to where those rooms are. It will help you later during the week. You will of course be able to find a map and I will explain what to do with that later.
Expo – The Expo floor is a great way to meet all those people you might talk to on the phone and never see in person. There will be many many vendors trying to sell you things and talk to you about your business. They are salesmen first and System i fans second in most cases. There are a few companies that are very PRO System i and you will be able to figure that out as you talk to them. IBM will of course have the largest and most confusing booth there. I have always been frustrated with their booth but always seem to spend the most time in it asking questions. If you have a vendor(s) you are considering this is the perfect place to get all the demos and nice treatment you can before you tell them you picked someone elses product. Just Kidding.
The Expo floor can be a good place to start to get to know what is going to happen this week. Also there will be people who have not seen each other in a year and this is the part I look forward to the most. I love seeing all the people who are the glue in the System i community.
Opening Session – This is not to be missed. I mean it if you miss this you might as well just go home now. The rest of the week is just blah blah blah. It’s the session to get you all fired up about the week and I always look forward to this session and will of course be blogging live from the floor during the opening session so if you want to know what is going on just stay here and I will post it. IBM always has something to talk about, they give away awards to people and the usual stuff but this is where the User Group starts the week off right. Don’t miss the opening session. Maybe this year I will get an award….probably not.
Daily COMMON Paper – Every day depending on the location you will be able to find a paper. In the past it was delivered to my door like the regular paper but in the recent past it’s just been all over the lobby. You will need to wake early and read the paper about the days activities. This is important. You will also take your list of things you want to do that day and compaire it to the paper to really make sure you are not missing something else. I have changed my mind mid-walk to a session when I saw something esle I really liked. There is also news about the convention and events that are going on that day you don’t want to miss.
Daily Events – You don’t want to miss the daily after hours events. They are ussually packed with free stuff that is really cool. Last year they gave away a brand new System i. How cool is that. Plus you get to hang out with all the other cool System i people. Nightly events are loads of fun and you may be tired but you will hear about them the next day and only wished you had gone. The Meeting of the Memebers is always a good time. Lots of System i guys & gals packed into a room ready to give the board hell….in most cases not since they have been doing a great job but there is always that one Al in the crowd who likes to complain and that is always a must see event. Plus you get to meet the board and they are really interested in what you have to say so bring it on and share your thoughts about the direction of COMMON, I mean it is your users group!
Map it out – You will be able to map out the center really well. Make sure you know where you are going. Lots of times COMMON takes up the entire convention center and they have to put rooms in odd places. Make sure you know where those odd places are before you try to make it there between sessions. I map out my day every night so that the next day I know I have time to stop and talk between sessions.
Book Store There will be a COMMON Book store with all the System i based books you have ever wanted. If you are looking for a book and it’s about the System i they will have it there. Bring your money.
Silent Auction – Every year there is a silent auction and it’s loads of fun. I got some great items last year and it all goes to a good cause, the COMMON Education Foundation, which helps educators learn about the System i.
Well that about raps up my thoughts for this week. Hope that helps you get the most out of COMMON.]]>
Chris Maxcer is talking about what he is looking forward to at COMMON? What are you looking forward to and what do you look forward to the most each year?]]>
Have a wonderful day off all of you and if you don’t have the day off let me recommend TheLadders.com, it’s where I was able to find the super cool job I have now and you should too. Working is nice but working all the time is just plain work.]]>
See i can do more than tech, and you all thought I didn’t have any depth!]]>
If you are going to COMMON can you tell me what you plan to get the most out of?
What track or set of topics are you looking most forward to?
If you are not able to attend COMMON, why are you not going?
If you think COMMON is a waste of time and money can you please explain why you think that and share with us what other events/training you attend during the year?
I am curious like a cat and that is why they call me “whiskers” so please help me, help you, understand COMMON. Have a great Weekend.
You can find the COMMON Online Session Guide here, and this is the place where you can schedule your entire week all in one spot. I would highly recommend that you use this to at least plan out your days at COMMON and then place them in your calendar. We have been asking for a way to import them into either Lotus Notes or Outlook but seems like the more we ask the less it gets done. I have heard the system is changing. Keep your fingers crossed. You don’t have to be registered for the conference in order to use it.
Background about me
David Vasta – I am the newest Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the team that presents Linux on System i & the new Open Source Products for System i. My main focus is getting you started with Linux and then exposing you to Linux on System i or as I call it “Linux & i”.
My Sessions —-> LINK
LINUX: Linux for Beginners – We are going to start with a ground zero approach here. I don’t care if you think you know UNIX of LINUX we are going to get into it as the most basic level. This will be a fun class and make sure you bring your laptops. I will tell you why near the end of this post.
LINUX: Administration – In this session your going to get a quick Administration training. There will be plenty of information to take home with you and try at your pace. We will cover setting up users, advance LINUX commands and build on that base from the session above.
LINUX: Intro to Shell Scripting – Now in this session we are going to take all that we have learned in the two other classes and put it to use in shell scripts. It’s going to be a quick and dirty overview so that you know what you need to do when you get back to the office. I will not be doing any kind of deep dive shell scripting but it will be fun I promise.
LINUX: Do You Ubuntu? – If you don’t already UBUNTU then you need to and I am going to tell you why. I did this session last year for the first time and had about 20 people in there. 20 super excited people about UBUNTU. I also had shirts, stickers and CDs. So make sure you show up to find out more about the most popular LINUX Desktop right now.
OPEN LAB: Linux on System i – I love an Open Lab! I will be in there with my hero, Erwin L. Early from IBM, and will be assisting you all with getting your first or maybe not your first Linux Server running on System i. I also think we are going to have the latest release of i5/OS too. It will run for a good 4 hours so bring a lunch, or I can run and get you something…..just kidding. This Open Lab was fun last year when I did it and it should be great this year too.
System i Bloggers Session – Lastly and most important is this this little session. While you read this post you then know why I am being asked to lead this session. I in fact have a blog (2 if your counting) and have the ability to follow my favorite System i blogger, Trevor Perry, so I should be OK. This session should be a blast and I hope Trevor and I can work up some funny bit of nonsense before we show up to entertain you all.
Why bring your laptop? – So I told you why I would explain this at the end and it appears we are there. I am assuming most of you run Windows but in case you don’t have no fear I will accommodate you all too. I run a Mac and will also support Linux too. I want give you all plenty of ways to say “David empowered me to do more with less” and in order to do that I am trying as hard a s I can to create a Virtual Machine for VMWare Player(FREE) and I hope Innotek’s VirtualBox(FREE). I can’t decide which but it will be Open and Free to you all. I want to put out three or four items per session. The Presentation, Companion Hand out with Worksheets, Samples (if possible), and the VM with all of my sessions on it for you to take with you and run on your PC on your time.
That way you can take it with you, play with it and if you mess it up, just start over. I think that will be nice if I can get it together. I will be using Ubuntu Server 7.10 & Ubuntu Desktop 7.10. If you can bring a Linux laptop with you that would be great. If you need to purchase one call these guys: System76 or DELL
REGISTRATION - Please take this warning/begging the right way. You need to go now and register for the convention. I think this years is going to be great. I also think it’s going to fill up fast. The System i is on the rise again and people are starting to get into COMMON again. Also make sure you fill out your grid early so COMMON has an idea as to where you are going to go during the day so they get the room size right along with other things like handouts and facilities. They let us presenters know a few weeks in advance how many people are going to be in the session and I kind of change the session content around and make changes based on those numbers. Let your presenters know you are wanting their sessions.]]>
I just found out that I will be presenting at COMMON this year with Trevor, let me say that again…I am going to present a session with TREVOR, and oh what and honor that will be. I think Trevor is the reason I started all of this.
There are many other fine bloggers that I hope we can have there as well and pay them some respect too. I would love to see everyone who attends COMMON show up and give us feedback, but I am not sure how that will happen without giving away a new System i Express to each of them.
Besides being a blogger and joining in with the ITKE to help you all back out I think it’s important to build a community and this session will just reinforce that idea.]]>
