COMMON - First Timers Kit

Posted by: David Vasta
COMMON - A users group, AS/400, System i, Tip of the Week

So this is your first time going to COMMON and your thinking to yourself it’s going to be scary, or maybe you just don’t know where to go or when to arrive.

Sunday - You need to make sure you are in Nashville early on Sunday. All the fun starts Sunday afternoon. If you are going to do a session on Sunday then you need to be there on Saturday, but at the least be at the hotel Sunday @ 12 PM. That way you can walk around and get to know the joint. The Expo floor opens @ 1 PM and you really want to spend as much time in there getting all the free crap they bring, and learning about their products. I will explain the Expo later too.

Make sure you have your week layed out as to what you want to do and what you want to attend and kind of make mental notes as to where those rooms are. It will help you later during the week. You will of course be able to find a map and I will explain what to do with that later.

Chris Maxcer is getting all geared up for COMMON

COMMON - A users group, AS/400, Linux in System i, System i

I am not the only one getting all nuts about the upcoming COMMON in Nashville, TN at the Opyland Hotel. I went there as a kid when I think I was about 11 or 12 and it was fun. I am sure it’s going to be fun this time to, but I don’t think I will get to meet Enis from The Dukes of Hazzard like I did the first time.

Chris Maxcer is talking about what he is looking forward to at COMMON? What are you looking forward to and what do you look forward to the most each year?

Lotus Notes 8.0.1 is uploaded to Passport Advantage - ME FIRST

Lotus 8, Lotus News

I just checked Passport Advantage and 8.0.1 is there and ready for the download. I think this is super! It’s kind of there but not really so I think it should be up there soon. Maybe they are uploading them in the back groud and we Lotus Nuts just can’t get at them yet? Either way there are going to be there sometime today and there is going to be a mad rush to get them.

Happy Presidents Day Y’all

Hope you at least get the day off. I have finally gotten around to getting most of my office unpacked and installed. I have been using my MacBook Pro for everything and been unable to do any gaming. My gaming rig was in a box along with a bunch of other stuff. So this weekend we rolled up the sleaves and got dirty trying to get moved in a little better. We were able to get both cars in the garage, and then decided it was a very tight fit and we needed to give away some stuff in order to get them both in. I have also been able to move into my office, we sort of. I am almost there. It’s been a long weekend and I think tommarow is going to be another work day aroudn the house. Ihave some tasks to complete for work before I make my next road trip.

Have a wonderful day off all of you and if you don’t have the day off let me recommend TheLadders.com, it’s where I was able to find the super cool job I have now and you should too. Working is nice but working all the time is just plain work.

How many of you are going to COMMON this year - System i User Group Meeting & Convention

Posted by: David Vasta
COMMON - A users group, AS/400, System i

Show of hands. I would like to know who reading this blog is planning on going to COMMON?

If you are going to COMMON can you tell me what you plan to get the most out of?

What track or set of topics are you looking most forward to?

If you are not able to attend COMMON, why are you not going?

If you think COMMON is a waste of time and money can you please explain why you think that and share with us what other events/training you attend during the year?

I am curious like a cat and that is why they call me “whiskers” so please help me, help you, understand COMMON. Have a great Weekend.

Presenting at COMMON : an overview of Linux & System i

COMMON - A users group, David on System i, AS/400, Linux in System i, System i

COMMON again is fast approaching (March 30 -April 2) and I wanted to take a moment to give you a really quick overview as to what I am presenting at COMMON and why you should think about attending one or all of my sessions.

You can find the COMMON Online Session Guide here, and this is the place where you can schedule your entire week all in one spot. I would highly recommend that you use this to at least plan out your days at COMMON and then place them in your calendar. We have been asking for a way to import them into either Lotus Notes or Outlook but seems like the more we ask the less it gets done. I have heard the system is changing. Keep your fingers crossed. You don’t have to be registered for the conference in order to use it.

Background about me

David Vasta - I am the newest Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the team that presents Linux on System i & the new Open Source Products for System i. My main focus is getting you started with Linux and then exposing you to Linux on System i or as I call it “Linux & i”.

Trevor Perry & David Vasta Bloggers Session

Posted by: David Vasta
COMMON - A users group, AS/400, System i

I try not to get to “big headed” about my status in the System i community and other technical things. I have always had a profound respect for my favorite aussie blogger, Mr. Trevor Perry, and I have know him to sound a little like Angus the IT Chap at times as well. (They may be the same person but I have never seen them together?)

I just found out that I will be presenting at COMMON this year with Trevor, let me say that again…I am going to present a session with TREVOR, and oh what and honor that will be. I think Trevor is the reason I started all of this.

There are many other fine bloggers that I hope we can have there as well and pay them some respect too. I would love to see everyone who attends COMMON show up and give us feedback, but I am not sure how that will happen without giving away a new System i Express to each of them.

Besides being a blogger and joining in with the ITKE to help you all back out I think it’s important to build a community and this session will just reinforce that idea.
