W. Curtis Preston let go by GlassHouse

Storage

I have just spoken with backup guru Curtis Preston, who confirmed that GlassHouse let him go at 9:30 this morning.  He said there was talk of a drive toward profitability and cutting costs.

But I’m wondering if there’s something else behind it. I’m amazed GlassHouse would let someone of Preston’s stature go the week before Christmas, and – according to him — with no advanced notice.  When I posted the news on Twitter, his former GlassHouse colleague Stephen Foskett also seemed more than mildly surprised.

That said, I am sure Preston will land on his feet, and soon. His visibility in the industry is huge. One of my fellow TechTarget storage bloggers, Taylor Allis, formerly of Sun and now with Capstone Technology Solutions, immediately tweeted back to me saying Curtis should call him if he’s looking. I’m sure that’s only the beginning.

Welcome back to the blogosphere! Your blog was offline almost all weekend. What happened?

Thanks for blogging about this. I, of course, blogged about it on my own site as well: <a href="http://www.backupcentral.com/content/view/206/47/" title="http://www.backupcentral.com/content/view/206/47/" target="_blank">http://www.backupcentral.com/content/vie…</a>

I’m social networking like crazy right now (linkedin, facebook, Wikibon), weighing all my options. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Aw, man, it was? They’re working to migrate it over to IT Knowledge Exchange, so it could’ve been a glitch with that.

Beth if GH wants to move toward profitability, then what have they been doing all of this time and particularly over the last year or so while working for the virtual IPO that never occured? How many VPs or similar titled people does GH still have and what other changes will be made under the banner of moving towards profitability, or, is this a prelude to a shift of GH doing acquisitions for growth to one of finally being acquired? Maybe the Dell Dude rumors are more than just that?

Best of luck to Curtis, he made it on his own feet before GH bought him and his business several years ago to help feed their growth hunger.

Cheers - GS

Hey, Greg. Don’t be too hard on them. First, don’t take this as a NEW drive to profitability; It’s just a continued one. I don’t want to speak for them, but they apparently saw me as more cost than value during the rough times that are likely ahead for any IT firm. I disagree, of course, as many clients told me they came to GH specifically because of me, with one of them as recently as a few weeks ago. But in the end they have to do what they think is right.

As to the “virtual IPO” to which you refer, I’d also cut them a little slack on that one too. Did ANYONE IPO last year? Who would, given the market? I just checked two “IPOs to watch in 2008″ articles, and NONE of the companies IPOd. The fact that a pure services company is even alive after last year says a lot.

Thanks for the luck, though.

Not to worry Curtis, I am going easy on them and cutting them slack. Likewise wishing both them and you all the best and continued success in what ever they and you end up doing on a go forward basis.

Cheers and happy new years.
