Hi Beth,
Good article, the numbers IDC quotes are compelling for vendors and worrisome for end users. Lots of growth in unstructured data with a larger percentage being content depots is a new problem. It is also true that cloud storage is designed to solve these problems. However, not all clouds need to be public. Internal or private clouds are a reality with offerings from EMC, ParaScale and others. These offerings satisfy many of the issues Richard points out. Network bandwidth is LAN connection and latency is minimal. The “eggs” live in the organizations basket and are managed internal people. Internal clouds can also start small and grow to manageable infrastructures that avoid the complexity of mega-cloud offerings like Amazon S3. I also expect we will see service providers creating private clouds for internal customers in 2009 (see link below for more on that) that avoid mega-issues and security concerns.

[...] It has also been suggested to me by IDC’s Rick Villars that the storage industry thinks of the cloud as an effort to replace all or part of an enterprise data center, but that cloud service providers actually represent a net new mass of storage consumers. It might be that both skeptics and cloud computing evangelists are exactly right, but they’re talking about differing markets. [...]
