Now tell us something we don’t know. The study found storage utilization at 50% (Optimization Anyone?) and 36% said their firms are understaffed. (Meaning 64% lied about not being understaffed to appease management…)

Dot Hill rolls out 2.5-inch SAS, SSD systems
Storage gets faster and denser this year with SSD and 2.5-inch drives. Dot Hill rolls out FC and SAS entry systems – offering a 3.5TB SAS array for $16k. Dot Hill arrays will also roll out through OEM partners Sun, HP, and NetApp.

Symantec Hops on the Cloud Wagon
But you’ll have to wait – their “cloud-based archiving services” won’t be around until early 2010. They currently offer SaaS backup through their Symantec Protection Network (SPN).

RAID changes its stripes, but not its value
New RAID discussions have sparked since the infamous “Who Needs a SAN?” article from Forrester. Bottom line? Redundancy = Good in storage. How it is implemented is the nature of the beast…

Post-RAID products
Great summary from Beth on new products announced this year, she highlights Atrato Velocity, Xiotech ISE, IBM XIV, and EMC Atmos.

Seagate’s new CEO faces declining sales, faulty drives
New Seagate CEO Steve Luczo has his hands full – Seagate lost $496 million last quarter from last year and its 1TB Barracuda 7,200 rpm drives have been freezing. They are laying 3,000 people off, but kudos to them for also cutting executive salaries from 15% to 25%. (Some execs get raises as good employees are let go…)

Cisco Prepares to Release Its First Virtualization Server
Cisco enters the server business with an Intel blade server that integrates networking capabilities. Wow…. Server vendor sales are already slow due to the market and server consolidation through VMWare. Now a ubiquitous network player enters the market… Good for Cisco, bad for HP, Sun, and IBM.
