The Windows 7, Windows 2008 R2, Exchange 2010 launch was more informative that I thought

Windows 7, Exchange 2010, Windows 2008 R2

Yesterday was the Windows 7, Windows 2008 R2, Exchange 2010 launch event here in Southern California (Orange County to be specific, Burbank is on Wednesday).  For the most part I was planning on going to pick up a couple of tidbits of information, and a free copy on Windows 7 Ultimate (I’m not stupid, someone offers me a free Windows license, I’m going to take it).  However the day was much more informative that I had expected that’s for sure.

In this post I’m going to cover some of the high level information, then over a few future posts I’ll give more into what was covered. Continued »

WebEx and Windows 7

Windows 7, WebEx

Apparently WebEx and Windows 7 doesn’t play nice very well.

I have been working from home recently and normally I just RDP into my workstation at the office.  Today I was working with Quest Tech Support and they setup a WebEx session for me.  When I fired it up on my workstation (like I’ve done on Vista and XP plenty of times) he was apparently looking at the actual console of my workstation, not the remote session that I was looking at.

Apparently either WebEX or Microsoft has some changes that need to be made (WebEx would be my bet) before Windows 7 goes live at the end of the year.

Windows 7 and Cisco VPN Software

Windows 7, Cisco VPN

We use Cisco VPN Software to access the office from home, Starbucks, etc.

There are several threads on the subject on the net (I used this one).  There are a couple of workarounds which are mentioned including backing up the ndis.sys file and putting it back after the install but before the reboot.  (This didn’t work for me, my laptop still blue screened.)

Another fix was to run the installer in Administration mode (I opened a command prompt using the “Run As Administrator” from the right click) then ran the installer.  (This did work for me.)

One annoying thing was when I imported our PCF file the group password wasn’t imported.  I had to use a Cisco VPN Client Password Decoder website to get the password from the PCF file to put into the address book.  Everything worked fine after that (at least so far).

Hopefully someone else finds this useful.

My Windows 7 Install Experience

Posted by: mrdenny
Windows 7, Installation, Video

Those of us with MSDN or TechNet accounts got access to the new Windows 7 build last night.  So I had my work PC spend the night downloading it, and spent this afternoon installing it today under VMware ESX.  I’ve recorded the install for posterity.  I paused the recording during the borring parts like waiting for the files to expand.
