My Back To Basics session was way more popular than I was expecting

Posted by: mrdenny
In Person Events, Back To Basics

At the last SoCal Code Camp I did several new sessions.  One of which was my Back To Basics session.  When I was setting up the session I figured that a few people would show, mostly because the wouldn’t have anything else to do for the first session.

What I got instead was a massive turnout.  There were even people standing at the back of the room (and the room held about 40 people).  As to the questions, they were all excellent, and there were so many of them.  Because there were so many questions we ended up only getting about half way through the material.

Because of this I wanted to announce that next time code camp happens (Woody tells me that there will be one in October this year up at USC) I’m going to schedule it as a two part session.  That way we can be sure to get through all the material that I want to cover, and have plenty of time for questions this time.  As soon as Woody opens up the site for scheduling I’ll be sure to get the both halves of the session posted so that we can get a good judge of what size room is needed.

Check back here and on the SoCal Code Camp website for additional scheduling details.

geekSpeak: Spatial Data in SQL Server 2008 with Denny Cherry

Posted by: mrdenny
Webcast, GeekSpeak, In Person Events

On 6/4/08 at noon PST (3pm EST) I’ll be presenting a MSDN Geek Speak session entitled “Spatial Data in SQL Server 2008 with Denny Cherry”. In the session we will explore the new support for spatial data in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. I will also be talking about managing huge SQL Server databases, and answer your questions about SQL Server. The Microsoft hosts will be Mike Benkovich and Mithun Dhar.

It’s a very free form session where we rely on Audience Q&A to really drive the direction of the session.

Here is the URL to register for the session.  Just click the URL and register, you’ll get an email reminder, etc from the Microsoft Events system.

I hope everyone can attend.  I hope to make my first geekSpeak a huge success.

SoCal Code Camp is coming up

Posted by: mrdenny
SoCal Code Camp, In Person Events

The SoCal Code Camp is coming up shortly (June 28th and 29th).  I’ve just finished posting my abstracts on the site for all to see.  I’ve tagged them all with SQL Server to make them easier to find.  I’ve currently got about 6 sessions on there.

I’m crazy I know.

If you aren’t in Southern California this might be a great way to get the boss to pay for a weekend in San Diego, California.

There’s also a free dinner which is called the Geek Dinner.

I hope to see you all there.

EMC World 2008 Day 0

Family, In Person Events, Storage, EMC World 2008, EMC

Today is the check-in and welcome party for EMC World.  EMC and Brocade had the Goo Goo Dolls perform at the welcome party.  The party and show were fantastic.

Funniest comment of the concert would have to be “This is the first all you can eat buffet rock show I’ve ever been to.”

The video was taken by my wife (who also had a great time, thanks for coming with me).  What you don’t see (but you can here) is John Rzeznik talking to one of the people serving the food about 2 feet from the front of the stage.  If anyone has better shots or video please post them and links to them.

Here are some stills which my wife took. She takes all the photos. I can’t take a picture to save my life.  (Click the image to see the bigger version.)

I’ll be speaking at the Inland Empire .Net User Group

Posted by: mrdenny
In Person Events, Query tuning, Resource Governor

The nice folks at the Inland Empire .NET User Group have invited me to come and speak to them.  This is a great speaking opportunity for me as they are about 20 minutes from my house.

I won’t be speaking there until December 9, 2008 (it’s amazing just how far in advance some of this stuff gets scheduled).

I’ll be giving two presentations at the meeting.  The first will be the ever popular Query Tuning, and the second will be a talk on the SQL Server 2008 Resource Governor.  The address and directions to the meeting can be found on the IE .NET User Group web site.  If you are going to attend there meetings they have an RSVP link on the site.

I’ll post about this meeting again closer to the meeting.

I’ll be speaking at the NJ SQL Server User Group

Posted by: mrdenny
In Person Events, Service Broker

The NJ SQL Server User Group has been kind enough to invite me to come speak to them about SQL Server Service Broker.

I’ll be speaking up there on August, 19, 2008.

I’ll be giving a similar presentation to the one that I gave at the SoCal Code Camp in February 2008.  I’ll be revising the slide deck a little bit based on how that session went.  If you are in the area I’d be thrilled to have you come by, listen to me blather on about Service Broker for a bit, and chat.  The Address, directions and times are posted on the NJ SQL Server User Group web site.

See you in New Jersey.

I had a great time speaking at the San Diego SQL User Group

Posted by: mrdenny
Service Broker, In Person Events, Query tuning

I’d like to thank the San Diego SQL Server User Group for having me come and speak to them tonight.  I had a great time presenting both my SQL Server Query Tuning and SQL Server Service Broker presentations.  You can grab the slide deck and sample code from those two links.

I was happy to fill in on short notice for them when there scheduled speak cancelled on them.  Hopefully the members liked the presentations as much as I liked giving them.  Hopefully the San Diego SQL Server User Group will invite me back in the future.

Slide Decks and Sample Code for San Diego SQL Users Group Meeting

Posted by: mrdenny
In Person Events, Query tuning, Service Broker

Below you will find links to download file files with the MS PowerPoint slide decks and sample files which I’ll be using at this weeks presentation at the San Diego SQL Users Group Meeting.

There is a lot of sample code in the Query Tuning file.  We’ll look through as much of it as we can depending on the amount of time that we have.

SQL Server Query Tuning

SQL Server Service Broker

I’ve included the Service Broker slide deck even though I’m not sure that we will get to it.  If there isn’t time to get to the slide deck during the meeting I’ll be happy to answer questions on it after the meeting (or posted here of course).

See you Thursday night.

I’ll be speaking at the San Diego SQL Server Users Group

Posted by: mrdenny
In Person Events, SQL, Query tuning, Resource Governor

The good folks of the San Diego SQL Server User Group has invited me to come speak to them on March 20, 2008.  The meeting starts at 6PM.

If you are in the area I urge you to come and check it out.  The topic of my talk will be Query Tuning as well as a bit of Query Governor.  If you attended the SoCal Code Camp in January and weren’t able to catch my session then, now is your chance.

The slide deck will be a little different so I’ll be adjusting it a little bit.  I’ll try and get the slide deck posted before the meeting, but no promises.

More information about the San Diego SQL Server User Group can be found on thier web site http://www.sdsqlug.org.  See you there.
