Harris Corp. meteorologists have used SOA to integrate weather information into the Next Generation Air Transportation System. They discussed their work at last month’s American Meteorological Society (AMS) conference in Atlanta.

The Next Generation Air Transportation System is an important rebuild of the U.S. air transportation system. Its objective is to avoid future traffic gridlock as air travel continues to increase.

Harris has developed a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based information management model, in which existing weather and decision-support applications were converted to SOA services and operated in a NextGen-like SOA environment. According to a company statement, lessons learned using this model will make it easier for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to integrate the most advanced weather information into NextGen.
