Appistry and NJVC pilot a private cloud offering

Grid and cloud computing pioneer Appistry is working with defense consultancy NJVC to create a private cloud computing environment addressing the taut security requirements of the intelligence and defense communities. An announcement was made this week at the GEOINT 2009 Symposium in San Antonio.

The two firms recently completed a proof of concept project that evaluated results as software was re-targeted at the cloud. Evaluated were an aeronautical flight navigation tool, a Web-based vertical obstruction dissemination system, and an ESRI-based on-demand chart creation utility.

According to an Appistry-NJVC white paper, teams were able to re-architect the USFIF navigation software to take better advantage of cloud architecture, improving performance so that hour-long processing could be accomplished within ten minutes.

A WebDVOF data store for alerting pilots and planners to obstructions was said to benefit from cloud architecture elastic scalability, expanding and contracting to handle load as it increased and contracted.

Meanwhile, more engineering was required to cloud-enable an ePODS chart creation utility. At this point, steps to enable the application layer of this system have been defined.

In a statement, NJVC President and General Manager Jody Tedesco said cloud computing offers a manageable, phased-in approach to development in which “the risks are minimized while rewards are maximized.”
