“ 'Wouldn’t it be cool if you had a common set of tools with which you could manage VMware, Hyper-V, etc.?' said Olds. Indeed it would, but that could be a far-off reality."

I would love to introduce Ms Woods and Mr Olds to CA Technologies solutions for dedicated virtualization management, the CA Virtual portfolio, which does indeed manage VMware and Hyper-V with a common set of tools:
[OLIST]

[ELEMENT]- [B]CA Virtual Automation [/B]provides elastic, pay-per-use self-service provisioning across heterogeneous virtual and cloud resource pools, including VMware, Hyper-V, and Amazon EC2, all from a single console.[/ELEMENT]

[ELEMENT]- [B]CA Virtual Assurance [/B]provides discovery, monitoring, root cause analysis, and remediation for heterogeneous virtual environments including VMware and Hyper-V[/ELEMENT]

[ELEMENT]- [B]CA Virtual Configuration [/B]provides change detection/prevention/remediation and configuration compliance for an even broader set of virtualization platforms, including VMware, Hyper-V, Solaris Zones, AIX LPARs, and Citrix XenServer[/ELEMENT]

[ELEMENT]- [B]CA Virtual Privilege Manager [/B]provides protection against accidental or malicious unauthorized use of privileged 'root' or 'admin' users, and also supports VMware and Hyper-V.[/ELEMENT]
[/OLIST]

And that is not even counting the CA Server Automation Suite - which includes support for not just VMware, Hyper-V, LPARs, Zones, Xen, etc., but also physical Windows, Linux, and Unix environments, all from a common set of tools!

So this is a great idea, but not even close to a far off reality. A present reality!
