[...] That may be so, but plenty of other people believe that Thompson may be preparing himself for a role in Barack Obama’s administration. Thompson was a vocal supporter of Obama’s during the campaign and Obama has said that he plans to create a national CTO position once he’s in office. Sources close to me say that could be a nice fit for Thompson. In addition to his experience running Symantec and growing it from a consumer AV company to a massive enterprise security and data storage firm, Thompson spent a large chunk of his career at IBM, where he learned the Big Blue management style which has served generations of executives well. He also knows his way around Washington fairly well, having served on the National Infrastructure Advisory Committee during President Bush’s first term. [...]

I do hope and also believe the Obama administration will take cybersecurity seriously - he is astute enough to appoint a CTO and knows what can happen to private information from personal experience. Also, President-Elect Obama has a much larger picture of the world, in general, than his immediate predecessors.

First of all "cyberspace" has been around longer than 8 years. So it can be said that no President has done anything for security. Secondly, be prepared to give up some of your current freedom to accomodate such security. Anyone in network security knows that restrictions annd limitiations are key to security. Lastly, none of this means squat if we can't impose penalties. Taking away your computer for malicious activities does not go far enough.

How is Obama supposed to up cybersecurity when he can't even secure himself? What with this Blackberry buzz going around, and combined with this story: http://blog.mylaptopgps.com/2008/11/09/not-too-fond-of-the-obama-nation-laptop-theft-from-polling-station/ it's doubtful even the President-Elect can do much to protect the cyberworld.
