Jeff, thanks for sending that report along. I'll have to dig around some more and see who is more accurate. I'll write an update in the next Blog Log column. In the final analysis, the main point of the article still holds up -- that someone got slapped pretty hard for the simple act of Web browsing in a public spot.

According to the report *I* read, he was approached by the *police* after the owner of the barbershop next door reported him as suspicous, having seen him park in front of the cafe numerous times without getting out. The cafe owner said if he had come in he could of used the wi-fi even without purchasing anything.
Wonder which version is correct?

You probably can't find anything about PiVX anymore because the company went under a couple of years ago. Got run into the ground first by money mismanagement and then the investors laid off everyone else who knew what they were doing. It's a shame, since the product was good and was very close to getting its first major customer.

If you are going to use the free Wi-Fi, buy a latte or muffin

Once again the old adage rings true, nothing in life is free! Reading Bill Brenner's Security Bytes blog about some poor SOB sitting in front of a coffee shop (not Starbucks) in Sparta, Mich surfing the web. Turns out under
