SCCM 2012 Beta

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

Have you checked out the SCCM 2012 Beta yet? It is a big change from the SCCM 2007 for looks and feel of the program. They have gotten away from the mmc and actually have a console for this now. They have added a Migration part to it so you can migrate from your SCCM 2007 Site to SCCM 2012 and that actually works as I migrated my SCCM 2007 trial site I had going on here at work to the SCCM 2012 Beta with no issues. I did not have much going on with that site other than to remote control to the remote locations and the computers there with issues so it was not a real complicated move. The complicated part was learning where they moved everything in the new console. More on this later as I dig deeper into this.

Windows 2008 R2 WDS and Adding NIC Driver

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

Did you ever get that error when trying to boot a image that the error comes up that it does not recognize the NIC driver. Well it is pretty easy to fix in Windows 2008 R2 WDS and all’s you have to do is download the NIC Driver for the device that you are trying to image and then Extract the driver into a folder. Once this is done you then open the Deployment Services manager and drill down to drivers and then right click and click Add Driver and then browse for the one you want to add and select that and finish and it adds the driver to be available to the images and you can add it to a current driver group or create a new one just for this. Now all you have to do is select the boot image you are trying to use and right click and select add drivers to image. Select the driver you loaded and unselect any others that you might have done previously and then let the wizard do it’s thing and away you go.

Myself and Change

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

Myself I just made another major change in my life and that was to move on from a postion I had for 11 years and 11 months to start anew with a different place and way of life. It has been interesting because that was the only second job I had ever had in my life and was a great job and a great boss and someone that I respected at that time and full of learning done on my own.  It was one that I lived and loved everyday living the dream. What is that saying “If you have a job you love you will never work another day in your life.” That is what I do everyday now as always but just somewhere else now and you know what? They really know what a team is about not the wanna be team concept that some companies have that you see around.

It is interesting that process of changing or even thinking about the changing. I would liken it to a divorce you have one side saying the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, to you don’t want to stay to many other things but it is like a divorce I should known been through a couple of those that is for sure. But the whole process from the day you see something that is wrong to going through the steps of trying to make it right and the other side going no there is nothing wrong it is you that is wrong to finally figuring out the other side has changed in a bad way for some and that is the way it was to be and then that decision to move on and go to that Greener Grass on the other side and yes it has been greener and still looking for flying pigs.

Winds of Change

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

We have all been through changes in our lives and some are good changes and some make you wonder why. Some people hate change and some people embrace changes. Personally I have had a lot of changes in my life from being a dad at 17 to going through a couple of divorces and quiting a job I grew up with because it was a family way of life and going back to school and starting a whole new path of life.

I have been told I am resistant to change at times but I would beg to differ as a tech you have to be able to change as new things are always down the road and you have to be up on them. I am only resistant to a change if it is not a good change and a change that is not beneficial and makes no sense in the schema of life especially if the change is of a variety that only benefits one group and not the whole good of all and especially if there are penalties added to the changes that are totally against everything that is believed in and feel and especially when they are words used that try to make it sound as a betterment for all but when the truth is really shown it only is good for one group only because they are the ones benefiting from it and not the ones actually doing the requirements.

This is a group and I will use a hypothetical group as an example and let’s call it the “Boss around Team To You” or Batty for short or if you are into acronym’s as a example and this group likes to throw the words be a Team Player or we will work with the team to get this done no problems. The problem with that is they might be a team but the ones below them are not part of the team in the way they are treated. But the Batty Team likes to use that word because it makes them feel good about themselves and they can boast that they have a team concept. Problem is the Team is only the Batty Team and not the others that are actually doing the work but they feel good because they have a team. They might say your part of the team until that part that they actually have to show there trueselves and then you wonder what happen to the team? Put me in coach I can play too yea right everyman for themselves then when something is pointed out that they don’t want to see or know about on how people are treated or how things are not right.

You look around the world and that is everywhere which is sad because there should not be that. But there is and they cover it with the word Team or your benefiting the team as a whole which is a cover word for the Batty Team looks good to others outside the Team or group or company.

Plus it is interesting to see how a upgrade in a persons position makes them change. You have people who handle it well and support the ones that are below them and then you have the ones who say one thing but in reality are actually doing something else and that is not backing a person up in the changes that are trying to bring about in making things better and processes that have gone haywire better but some do not want to admit because then they would look bad because they are backing the idea that totally is wrong and unfair to others but they just love it when they have a bunch of lemminings that is under them because they don’t question why even though it is wrong or are such yes people that it makes them feel good because no one questions anything. That is so 1984 the movie don’t you think

But it is interesting that is such is the way of life anymore screw the little people doing the work as long as the team looks good. In my world your word is your bond and right is right and wrong is wrong. Or if it looks like a pig and smells like a pig or squeals like a pig must be a pig but the pig still isn’t flying.

Change is interesting in life and it happens everyday and for the ones who say it is all about change and things will never be like they was, well the things that have changed are not always a good thing whether they want to admit that or not and that does not have to be that way if they can admit that the changes might not have been for the best but aw heck let’s go with them because that is the way things are not what is better for the employees or customers. Or because the information that was given to them by others who are doing a CMA is not right.

Isn’t it supposed to be about the customers and how to give them the best solution for what they need and not over sell things they don’t need but give them equipment that will handle what they are doing or need to do and grow into. Or is it all about the bottom line and how much can be made off them till they move somewhere else? Now if that happens that is another Change that is not good for all and was only a short term kind of thing because to have the Batty Team and the lowly Lemmings and Yesmen they have to have those customers. I guess they would end up like those mice walking around looking for there cheese because it went away and wondering what happened.

SBS 2011 and Windows 7 Pro Connect Errors

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

Working on installing a new SBS 2011 server into a workgroup setting and when we went to install a couple of Windows 7 Pro machines the http://connect would not work it would error out on the contacting the domain part. DNS lookups and everything would resolve properly. What we finally did to get the machines to connect after a lot of head scratching was to add the domain suffix to the properties of the NIC and then it would work. Strange more on that as I look into this but for now this is our quick work around.

Windows 7 Mapped Drives not showing in program install

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

Was moving a client to a new Windows 7 machine and one of the programs that needed to be installed need to see the mapped drive for the location data. Well in Windows 7 that behavior was changed so you don’t see those mapped drives. But you can add that ability back by doing this.

Open the Registry and the HKey_Local_Machine and Software and Microsoft and Windows and Current Version and  Policies  and System and add DWORD EnableLinkedConnections and set the value to 1

Changing the IP of a Sybase 9.0 on a Windows 2003 Server

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

I had a customer who was moving their servers into a new Data center from another location which required changing the IP addresses of the servers. One problem was their main LOB was a Sybase 9.0 server and I had no clue if it would effect it or not that was something the customer didn’t check out with their vendor. When we got it moved to the new site 35 miles away from the old location sure enough when I turn the service for the database from disabled to automatic and tried to start the database it was no go. Did a quick check on the web and everything I found referred to a txt file of some kind so I went digging in the Sybase Central under Adaptive Server Anywhere 9 and then services I found under the databases. I think right clicked and properties and under configuration and Parameters it referred to a dbsrvcfg.txt file. Went looking for this and found it had the old IP of the server here changed this rebooted the server and away we went. Then it was a fun drive home as we had a blizzard going on outside which turned my 1 and a half hour drive home into a 3 and a half hour drive home. We had a plan in advance but the weather had other ideas.

Microsoft HyperV Error 2424869

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

I had a Windows 2003 R2 server running virtually that I had removed a bunch of data from and I wanted to compact the Virtual Data drive. When I shutdown the server and tried to compact the drive I received this error.  “The system failed to compact ‘C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\storage\F_2010-06-07T204253.vhd’. Error Code: 2424869” The fix was simple and that was to start the Virtual Server back up and remove the Shadow Copies on the drive that I was trying to compact and shut the server back down and then it would allow me to compact the drive no worries.

OWA and Internet Explorer 8 not logging off on closed session.

Roger Crawford Roger Crawford Profile: Roger Crawford

Ok ran into a interesting one with Internet Explorer 8 and Exchange OWA and generic users. What was happening was the first user would login to their OWA and when done close the session and when the next person opened it up it would go to the first users session. Not good what I had to do was on the shortcut to IE was to add a -noframemerging switch to it. Guess it was a change in the way IE and the Session manager acts and this was the fix to make it close the session and prompt for a login again.
