I have a customer who is interested in the Microsoft 2010 Lync Server, so because I was not up with this product and my wife was gone to AZ to visit her father I had time to install this and play. Because I was not up on the product I did a lot of searching and found the MS document on how to set this up and install in their wordy way but I keep digging and came across this article which was a not so wordy document which if you are like me let’s get to the meat and potatoes and forget the salad here. http://imaucblog.com/archive/2010/09/15/step-by-step-microsoft-lync-2010-consolidated-standard-server-install-guide/
I have helped and installed earlier versions of the MS communicator type of product and the earlier versions was a major pain to install because of all the little parts and pieces you had to do ahead of time of during the install. I know in earlier versions you had to do some DNS entries and this install was no different but that did not take any time to get the 1 sip record in and the 3 A records for the other pieces. In prior installs of the earlier versions you had to create the different certificates. The nice thing about installing MS 2010 Lync Server the install walks you through all the different parts of setup pretty nicely and it will even create your cert requests and process them and install on the server. I was pleasantly surprised about how straight forward the install was. It did take some time to do this as I was learning on the fly and checking both documents as I installed to make sure I wasn’t missing anything but the end result was it is installed and running and the customer is now testing this out.
