Showing Stale/Phantom Devices in Device Manager

MikeLaverick MikeLaverick Profile: MikeLaverick

As you may know after completing a P2V process you have to remove “stale hardware” or what Microsoft calls “Phantom Hardware”. This is the hardware from the original physical machine which is no longer present. There is a variable you can parse to Microsoft’s Device Manager to force these devices to be displayed (this is beyond the “Show Hidden Devices” option in Device Manager menus)

I have this in a batch file for this purpose:

@echo off
cls
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
