How to Increase the Number of Idle ICA Listener Ports Available in Terminal Server

MikeLaverick MikeLaverick Profile: MikeLaverick

A frequently asked question is how to increase the number of idle port listeners that are available in Terminal Server. By default Terminal Server creates two idle port listeners. It should not be necessary to increase the default number of idle port listeners. Each idle port listener defined consumes resources. If it is neccessary to increase this value, use small increments.

Set the IdleWinStationPoolCount to “suggested increments of 2″. This setting is under HKEY\LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Terminal Server.

Please refer to the following two articles in TechNet for more information about how Terminal Server creates and uses the idle port listeners and how Terminal Server manages ICA and RDP connections in general.
