It’s good to see Cisco finally realizing focusing on software, and particularly management, is essential if it’s going to keep its customers. To answer your question as to why Cisco is apparently accelerating the demise of one of it’s core markets – well, someone is going to do it. If Cisco doesn’t help customers make this move, one of their competitors will and then they’ll lose everything. Chambers is betting that being a trusted IT partner for his customers is going to keep revenues flowing, whatever product or service mix that means they have to sell. Will it work? I guess we’ll find out, but I’m pretty sure standing pat wouldn’t work, so you have to think it’s worth trying.
