WRT the Catalyst 6500 chassis you mention, perhaps a little clarification is in order.  Those particular versions of the chassis were marked for EoS as they were replaced by improved versions of the same chassis--for example, the Catalyst 6509 was replaced by the Catalyst 6509-E.  Its also useful to note that this should not be a shock to anyone as the EoS announcement was made back in 2005 and hardware support will continue until 2012: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/prod_end-of-life_notice0900aecd8035ece4.html
