Couple of corrections:

We at SNA participated in the Bigfoot port, but it was a community effort, not our project.

Also, note that my comments address ALL of the specialty engine MIPS, not just IFLs. zIIPs and zAAPs cannot and do not run Linux (in fact, z/OS is the only operating system that can do anything at all with zIIPs and zAAPs). The point is that the relative percentage of new purchases is tipped *at the moment* toward the specialty engines, for purposes that I noted.

The issue of the subcapacity engines is something that will come forward Real Soon Now -- the end is near for the Flexen, and I don't think IBM has anticipated that the workload for the smaller boxes will likely leave IBM platforms. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

As a quick add to Matt's post, Jim Stallings (GM of System z) did say in June last year that the [A href="http://searchdatacenter.techtarget.com/news/article/0,289142,sid80_gci1269647,00.html"]number was 25%[/A]. Seeing as IBM is pushing the zLinux angle hard, I wouldn't be entirely surprised that it's gotten up to 50%, or is at least close to it.
