Improving Operating Efficiency

Little trivial expenses can really hurt your bottom line. In my daily work I try to pay special attention to the various expenses our company is paying, I try to analyze expenses that were taking for granted for years and try to find out why we are baring these types of costs.

Day to day office work can be a huge cost generator, items like (phone calls, fax usage, printing, office supplies) are usually over looked, but they can generate significant amount of cost. Little examples to illustrate my point: our company is using the fax extensively as a means of communications and when I asked why we don’t use e-mails the answer was “this is how we do it”, nobody thought about the cost associated with using the fax line or the cost associated with using papers and ink for the fax machine. When I reviewed our phone bill, I found out that using the fax line was costing us three times more than using the phone line. New policy: Don’t use the fax unless is absolutely necessary, use e-mails is the main tool for communications.

There are many small hidden costs that you can reduce or completely eliminate, have regular review of your company operations, you will see how much costs you will be able to cut.

Good thoughts, Yusuf, especially these days when every nickel counts. There are some ideas in the webcasts on IT Manager Connections that IT Managers need to pay attention to.
