Contest Bounties: Last chance to win an iPad!

Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

The end of the iPad contest is drawing near – next Wednesday, February 16th to be exact – and we want to see more of you in the final drawing. In order to help push you over the 500 knowledge point requirement, we assembled some last chance bounties to get you in the running:

1. Tweet about ITKnowledgeExchange and get 50 knowledge points. (Limit one tweet per day.)

2. Ask or answer 5 questions on the topic of your choice and receive 250 knowledge points. Email the links to Melanie@ITKnowledgeExchange.com for review.

3. Share your top security blog picks for 100 knowledge points.

4. Worse-Case Scenarios: Share your worst case experience in security gone awry. Rogue employees deploying to the cloud without your knowledge until something goes wrong? We want to hear your horror stories to help other members and potential rogue employees avoid the same pitfalls. 200 knowledge points.

5. Recommend a newer member in the community to be a featured member including why you think they’d be a great pick. Nominations of members who have already been featured do not qualify. 100 knowledge points. Send nominations to Melanie@ITKnowledgeExchange.com.

The contest ends February 16th, so take advantage of your final few days! Check out the official rules of the contest.

The IT Blog Top 10: February 10, 2011

Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

Catch up on your IT news with the latest from the IT blog top 10. From the valuable experiences of Mr. Denny to major changes in storage, data center design, and virtualization.

1. Mrdenny’s our go-to guide on all things SQL Server, so when he talks, we listen. What’s he saying this week? If you aren’t doing backups, you aren’t doing your job.

2. If you’re like me, you gathered around the tube this past Sunday to watch the…Super Bowl commercials. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one since Ron Miller had a few things to say about one in particular: Salesforce Chatter Super Bowl ads incomprehensible.

3. Nobody likes price raises, but these folks have some good points. Dave Raffo highlights some of the reasons Mozy customers balked at cloud backup price increases.

4. The Virtualization Room’s Colin Steele has the rundown of the shake up of the higher ups at VMware: VMware names co-presidents, Maritz still CEO.

5. What’s your data center built on? Stephen Bigelow at the Data Center Apparatus wonders if it’s a leg-up on raised floors.

Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

Today’s featured member, HMSSL2K, is a pretty familiar face around the forums. Hailing from Texas, Bruce has worked with AS/400 for the past 18 years. He started out as a third shift operator while attending college, then moved up through different ranks and companies into his current position as an AS/400 administrator. Though his degree is in MIS and PCs, he jumped into AS/400 and never looked back. He loved the many different hats of an admin, and the opportunities to interact with customers and vendors. If HMSSL2K has helped you out recently, be sure to approve his answer and pay the knowledge forward!

The IT Blog Top 10: February 3, 2011

ITKE Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

This week’s top 10 has a few treats in it, from Mrdenny’s demo slip-ups to a call and response of Oracle’s big storage announcement this past week. Enjoy what many others have been enjoying from the blogs and get caught up on the latest in all aspects of IT. See you next week!

1. Even superstars like Mrdenny have bloopers: When the demos don’t work, the men and women are separated from the boys and girls.

2. Brendan Cournoyer’s has updated his post with some screenshots from SCVMM 2012 demos. Check them out and decide whether or not Virtual Machine Manager 2012 will clear the way for private clouds.

3. Mark Fontecchio whet our appetites with the promise of Oracle making a big storage hardware announcement this week, and the big wait is finally over.

4. Ron Miller pulls out the tough love, says Microsoft needs more than gimmicks to succeed in the cloud.

5. Dave Raffo has updated his speculation on Dell’s plan to resell EMC VNX, not VNXe.

ITKE Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

Today’s featured member, RamseyB, is an IT Coordinator for a small estate and wealth management company in Denver. He’s the one-man IT department, which means he runs into a lot of odd problems outside of his knowledge base: “Without ITKnowledgeExchange and other IT forums I would be completely lost.” And without people like Ramsey helping out where he can, we’d be lost as well. He hopes you’ll understand that since he is the sole IT guy, it may take him some time to respond to follow-ups. Take your time, Ramsey, and thanks for all of your hard work! If Ramsey’s helped you out recently, be sure to approve his answer and pay the knowledge forward!
