Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

This week’s IT Blog Top 10 is a little heavy on the storage and cloud information. Get your fill and let us know what you think! Want to get in on the conversation about cloud storage? Answer this week’s Open IT Forum question or just see what others are saying.

1. What happens when you’re waiting on Microsoft? You keep waiting, just like Nokia, stuck in limbo waiting for Windows 7 phones.

2. Now it’s just getting embarrassing: Sony breach timeline shows missteps, says security firm.

3. Held together by tape: NetApp, CommVault forge OEM deal around SnapProtect, tape.

4. Apple’s announcement is making waves, with Ron Miller asking, is iCloud an ending or beginning for cloud storage vendors?

5. Mrdenny hit the IT Knowledge Exchange nail on the head with his answer to this question: Why do I do all this work for free?

Featured Member: Yorkshireman

ITKE Melanie Yarbrough Profile: MelanieYarbrough

Today’s featured member, Yorkshireman, has earned his silver and bronze badges by helping out around the community. His specialty lies in AS/400, and he has the AS/400 Genius Badge to prove it. I asked Yorkshireman for a little blurb of his professional experience and it was so awesome, I didn’t want to ruin it by paraphrasing:

Nearly 40 years of grappling with code. Assembler onwards. System design with DB2 UDB for major clients in EMEA. There’s nowt that’s new, apart from the names we give old ideas. Read the manuals – more accurate than people like me guessing at your particular circumstance. If you can’t be bothered to get the accurate story, you can’t be building rock solid, reliable code.

Oh – and I can be a grumpy cuss sometimes…

Weblogs and cellphones built on poorly secured operating systems are a device of the devil. Mailing lists and letters are more secure. Avoid credit cards.

But, carry out some functional decomposition, and produce an elegant, efficient, expandable, and maintainable set of program code which places intuitive controls into the hands of users, lets us walk away and sleep soundly, and enables all support calls to begin on the premise of ‘the software is not at fault’ and I’m a happy bunny.

If Yorkshireman has helped you out with an AS/400 question, be sure to approve his answer and pay the knowledge forward.
