Have you tried ‘open and repair’?  Start Excel and click on File -> Open.  Click on Browse and a Windows Explorer window will open, navigate to your file and click on it to select it.  Instead of clicking the ‘Open’ button, click the small arrow beside Open and select ‘Open and repair’, Excel will then try to recover any data from the file.

Have you or anyone else tried to open them with the same version of EXCEL that they were created with? I would try that next. Trying to determine if the objects are damaged.

I tried to open them on a different computer and the same results.
Transferred to USB and down loaded to new computer and got the same results.

Run Excel repair from MS Excel which is a built-in repair utility of Microsoft, It can help you to recover the file.

Are you trying to open them with a different version of Excel? Are these documents protected?

Are there any macros in the spreadsheet? Just a thought that things may have gotten detached after the upgrade.

It sounds like your files may be corrupted. Perhaps try loading them in Excel on another computer.

    I agree with Kevin.

It sounds like the files are corrupted. It might happen if you moved/transferred them from one place to another.

The above instructions worked for me. I have Excel 2016, and needed to open an excel 97 document. I opened it under 'open and repair' and it opened fine.

One thing that Microsoft did in Office 365 is that some of the older versions of Office Documents are no longer recognized as a valid version. Microsoft did not really publicize this that they were going to do this. I discovered this issue in Access and in Word. You many have to go into these Office Documents with a newer version of office but not 365 and save them to a newer format so Office 365 will recognize them properly.

There use to be a link on Microsoft's site for a compatibility tool for opening a different excel version of a document. I don't know if it's still available.
