It is possible in the Notes client to use LotusScript to add lines to an existing Excel workbook when (1) the target sheet is the first of a multi-sheet workbook, and (2)that first sheet is formatted differently in the upper half from the lower half, and (3) each half contains merged cells, and (4) the merged cells in the 2 halves do not coincide, and (5)the merged cells in the lower half are the target cells? If so, any hints on addressing the target sheet and the target columns?

The short answer to your question is yes! However, the implementation is a little more complex. Using ActiveX you can open any Excel spreadsheet and navigate through it and add values and save the spreadsheet back. This can be done without the user even seeing the document, but it can be pretty slow. You might want to search M$ for a VB example of how to do this then modify it to work in LS.
