I’d like to write a query that would allow me to view items with a characteristic of my choosing and filter out the others. Is it possible to write something like this in SQL and use it in SQL Server 2005?

Yes it is possible. In fact, that is one of the most common things you do with SQL.
You might want to be a little more specific, so we can better help you.

That would be using the WHERE clause of the <a href=”http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/sql-server/back-to-basics-the-select-statement/”>SELECT</a> statement. You may want to look over the <a href=”http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/sql-server/tag/back-to-basics/”>Back To Basics</a> section of the <a href=”http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/sql-server/”>SQL Server with Mr. Denny</a> blog.
