I recently got a job working on Avaya servers and products. Could you tell me how an Avaya certification would help me in the future with other job opportunities, if I were to earn one?

Hello!
I’m a resident certification/career adivisor for SearchNetworking.com (and other TechTarget) sites, and have been requested to weigh in on your query (for more info on me, check out my bio and links at http://www.edtittel.com). As a pretty substantial player in the telephony landscape, Avaya commands plenty of business and the name recognition that goes with it. Though I hope it’s obvious that an Avaya certification will have the greatest perceived value at a company that uses their systems and gear, IP telephony and VoIP skills and knowledge are in pretty high demand right now in general. That gives an Avaya credential (and other VoiP or IP telephony certs from Cisco, Nortel, Alcatel/Lucent, and so forth) a bit more value than might be immediately apparent.
The previous poster is absolutely correct to observe that earning a certification indicates both interest in and motivation toward learning and career development. Employers generally tend to look on such things positively, as long as you don’t try to substitute certs for either a college degree or at least some relevant on-the-job experience. Employers want to hire people who have *all* of these things, so it’s a mistake to think more of one will substitue for very little or none of another.
HTH, and thanks for posting,
