SQL Server 2005

This may seem old but I've been setting up a SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008 and I'm trying to pare it down to its barebones (while it still being functional). On that, I'm looking at the Server Core but I'm not sure if it will run on SQL Server on that SKU.

No you can not install SQL Server 2005 on Server Core. The first edition of SQL Server that supports being installed on Server Core is SQL Server 2012 (I think). It might be SQL Server 2008 R2, but I’m pretty sure it’s SQL 2012.
