Good Question Ten2008!
When the AS/400 was first launched, almost twenty years ago, the question was raised why the architecture does not support PC like applications. IBM then responded by saying that the future plan for the AS/400 was to “put a PC into the box”, as a future strategy. I am still waiting for that to happen. Here we are, twenty years down tha track, still waiting for a proper e-mail system out of the i-series.
Hope someone in IBM is reading this and taking note. Something tells me that we will be waiting for a long time for PC type applications within the i-series.
Years ago Lotus Notesbecame an option for the ‘AS/400′. For more than 5 years I have used Lotus Notes email a.o. natively run on my AS400′-systems (currently 520 Power6 v6r1).
We had the FSIOP and followon insertion cards running windows inside the AS/400. Thin clients has been used with pc-apps running in this ‘inside-the-AS/400-box’ ; – worked fine. So, IBM actually had a pc inside the box.
Today our work-places consists of pc’s connected our the Power System i. We are in a proces of installing Linux on our Power system to support OpenOffice, so… pc-functionality – it’s there NOW.
