Word 2010 Fields – what can they do?

I have been asked to look into the possibility of using Word fields to try and trigger some other actions in a document - but I am not familiar with Word Fields enough to even know if this is possible. The idea is that someone would be sitting in front of their computer, entering information into a Word Document with Fields set up to trigger entry of specific areas/codes into another application. The Word documents would have some smarts/controls so a user can’t skip questions on the Application without answering them, and might also work like an Excel formula, with an IF/THEN functionality (i.e. IF someone was born in 1949, THEN they would get a seniro's discount). This sounds like an awful lot to expect from a Word Document to me....but technology changes so rapidly, I could be missing the potential in MANY things out there! Does anyone know exactly what is possible to do using fields? I have been doing some research, but mostly I am coming up with how to create them, how to work with related codes...... but not what all they can do. Any input welcome!

    You can have the Header and/or Footer changed automatically with Word Fields.
    Here is a link to a page that discusses using a Macro for other updates, but I am not sure it will do what you what.
    Can you write you application using EXCEL?
