Hey There – all you need is a wireless printer and for your wireless laptop to connect to the same network as the wireless printer. Then as long as you are on the same network you will be able to access the printer just like any old network printer. Both machines should be configured to use DHCP for the easiest setup. When using DHCP you do not have to know the network settings.

Well, I'll assume you have a router in your networking configuration. I'll use the wireless enabled printer I have as an example: Step 1.) Ensure your router is configured for DHCP configuration Step 2.) Configure your printer through its software installation and driver setup. Mine is a Lexmark 6550 and as long as Step 1 is good, it should auto set your IP / Gateway information for you. Step 3.) Test print to ensure operation If you have no router, you should be able to set the IP of the printer and then try and ping it from the desktop machine, and ensure you can reach its IP and there's no issues there. Set it as ex: 192.168.1.100 and your desktop is 192.168.1.101 and you should be fine w/o a gateway. I know back in the 10Base-2 and 10Base-T days we got by just fine without routers for small networking, its not mandatory it just makes it a heck of a lot easier.
