Wireless Device Access

Wireless, Mobile

I have COMCAST High Speed Internet. The first device connected to it is a Vonage Motorola Voice Hub, and then a Linksys Wireless DSL/Cable Hub. Is there a way for me to access my wireless TIVO devices across the Internet since their new addresses on the Linksys are default 192.168.1.*?

Hi,

I assume the Linksys device is really a router with a 4 port Ethernet switch, rather than a hub. If I'm correct - and since you called it a hub - it leaves open the question, what is the Motorola device, actually? Since you have the Motorola device between the cable modem and the Linksys router, I can only conclude that the Motorola device is also a router. Which device is assigning DHCP? Let's start over, assuming a correct home network configuration, which has one router and one source of DHCP. To access these devices over the Internet from outside the home firewall, you need to: (1) determine the MAC addresses of the target devices, (2) enable port forwarding in the one router, (3) know the IP address of the Internet side of your home network, and (4) use an application that lets you specify the port as well as the IP address when you try to connect. --Bob Young

The Motorola is a VOIP Router, and yes the LinkSys is a wireless switch with a 4 hard wired ports as well. The IP addresses are distributed by the DHCP turned on in the Linksys so they are 192.168.1.100-*. The Cable Modem has the initial IP address from COMCAST.

Okay, good - we’re getting closer to being able to give you a definitive answer. I suspect this is also going to be educational for some others, so it’s worth going through the steps. The Linksys router is acting as the DHCP server, assigning addresses in the range of 192.168.1.x. What is the IP address on the upstream port of the Linksys Router? Since you said that the Motorola device is also a router, it has to have an IP address on both of its ports as well (upstream and downstream). What are they? Are you sure the Motorola router isn’t also acting as a DHCP server, providing the Linksys router with its upstream address? The point of all this is that we have to make sure we identify all of the places where port forwarding needs to be configured.

I will let you know. I will have to contact Vonage and see how I can log into their Router and get that information, stand by it may take me a couple of days.

itsquire, if the Motorola device is owned by Vonage, they probably won’t let you have access to its configuration. It will probably work to simply reverse the order of the devices: cable modem –> Linksys broadband router –> Motorola/Vonage VoIP gateway. If the phone still works, you will have exactly one router (the Linksys) in which you need to configure port forwarding. (For other interested readers, the port forwarding arrangement that we’re going to set up with this problem is the same one you would use to establish a remote connection to a PC via VNC, etc.) –Bob Young

hi, my name is Sheena I work with a Voip service before as technical support representative..Basically with the Motorolla device is a telephone adapter and built-in router..If you can provide me with the model number of the device i can provide you with the default username and password to the router page..but tp log on to the router page, just plug your pc directly to the Vonage device and open a web brose, change the address to 192.168.15.1,,it will route you directly to the page but sometimes it will ask for the username and password..so if you can provide me with the model number ..I can give u those infos..__Sheena Mae
